What is OpenCoesione?

OpenCoesione Project is an initiative promoted by the Department                                       for Economic Cohesion and Development of the Ministry of                                            bandiera-inglese Economic Development of the Italian Government.

The term “Cohesion Policy” (CP) is related to a political framework of solidarity at European level that is supporting hundreds of thousands of projects in the EU through two structural funds -the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF)- and the Cohesion Fund.

The Cohesion Policy is outlined in the Single European Act (1986) and aims at “filling the gap among different Regions and speeding up the development of less advantaged Regions”.

The Treaty of Lisbon defines a third dimension, talking about a “cohesion policy of economic, social and territorial nature”. This means that the Cohesion policy must also promote a more balanced and sustainable development.

The European regional policy is linked to a more specific action by the ERDF, and is implemented at regional level.

With the Cohesion policies the Italian Government and the European Commission help Italian Regions to grow in economic and social terms. Cohesion policies are focused mainly on issues such as infrastructures and facilities.

The Project OpenCoesione gives its support to highlight how Cohesion policies are implemented in Italy. The aim of this initiative is to enable those Citizens who are interested (students, journalists, etc.) to get data and information regarding the use of resources and to assess their effectiveness and coherence.

With this project we want to better understand where and how funds are invested, and to let Citizens know about bureaucratic, economic and social problems, including waste and bad use of public money.
