Maturita’ 2013

Congratulations to 5D/5G students for their brilliant exam results!

A poem for you:

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Tieni stretti i tuoi sogni
perché se i sogni muoiono
la vita è come un uccello con le ali spezzate
che non può volare
Tieni stretti i tuoi sogni
perché se i sogni se ne vanno
la vita è un campo sterile
congelato dalla neve.

— Langston Hughes

Good luck to you all and ….take care.

Programming Languages

Here’s an infographics on the history of programming languages. The first to be credited with one of them was an English woman, Ada Lovelace, in 1843.

TED Talks: Violence against women

Please take a moment to watch this TEDTalks video, it is much more than just a listening exercise:

Jackson Katz: Violence against women—it’s a men’s issue

Schermata 05-2456442 alle 18.04.53

Jackson Katz is co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), which enlists men in the struggle to prevent men’s violence against women.

The key sentence of his talk is the following:

In the end, what’ll hurt the most is not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

Martin Luther King.

MVP fosters the so called bystander attitude, that is the same attitude which is recommended in case of bullying for instance: the bystander, the witness, must “speak up”, become a positive leader . Silence, as M.L.K. said, is what hurts the most, especially the silence of our friends.

London views

A series of aerial views of London.

Let’s start with Shakespeare’s GLOBE theatre, which was reconstructed in 1997 . It is located approximately 750 feet (230 m) from the site of the original theatre.

And now let’s take a look at Piccadilly Circus, a road junction and public space of London‘s West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. (photo courtesy of http://www.londonita.com/londrablog/)

Another busy intersection in the heart of London is Oxford Circus, between Oxford Street and Regent Street. (photo courtesy of http://www.londonita.com/londrablog/)

We cannot forget Trafalgar Square, which commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars over France which took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar in Los Canos de Meca, a town in the municipality of Vejer de la Frontera, near Cadiz, Spain.

Our next view is Southbank Centre, the largest single-run arts centre in the world, which includes, among others, Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall. (photo courtesy of http://www.londonita.com/londrablog/)
