When Barack Obama takes the oath of office on 21 January, 2013  he will become the 45th president of the USA. But how did he get re-elected? How does the system work? And who came before him?

  • First of all, why don’t you try the following quiz to test what you already know about the American presidential election system?
  • Now, take a look at this map with the 2012 Election results, from the Washington Post. As you can see, Obama won in those states with a high number of Great Electors (such as California, Florida, Ohio, New York, Illinois) which gave him the majority of the votes.
