A Christmas Carol

Well, not Dickens’s story, but a very popular song called “12 Days of Christmas“. It is a cumulative song, with twelve verses, each describing a series of increasingly grand gifts given by “my true love” on one of the twelve days of Christmas.

The song, first published in England in 1780 without music as a chant or rhyme, is thought to be French in origin; the version we know is a 1909 arrangement of a traditional folk melody by English composer Frederic Austin.
