Today at 5.30pm BST, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning monarch in 1,000 years of British history. She has been on the throne for 63 years and 216 days, since February 6 1952, when her father, George VI, died in his sleep.

The Queen has therefore overtaken her grea-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, who reigned for 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes.
